I felt called to make this post because I want to make 2018 as positive as possible for myself and the people around me aka you guys! I went to the gym today for a few reasons: its good for my body and my clothes fit better. But the real reason I am here is because of my anxiety. Amongst the incredible things that happened in 2017 it was also the toughest year for my mental health. Through my song ‘War Paint’ I know that some of my fans can relate so I wanted to share what has been working for me.
Exercise is so powerful for several reasons. Most importantly, it promotes all kinds of changes in the brain, including neural growth, reduced inflammation, and new activity patterns that promote feelings of calm and well-being. It also releases endorphins, powerful chemicals in your brain that energize your spirits and make you feel good. Finally, exercise can also serve as a distraction, allowing you to find some quiet time to break out of the cycle of negative thoughts.
For me running is the most effective. I turn on a fire playlist and focus on the sensation of my feet hitting the ground or the rhythm of my breathing. By adding this mindfulness element—really focusing on your body and how it feels as you exercise—you’ll not only improve your physical condition faster, but you may also be able to interrupt the flow of constant worries running through your head.
If you are having a “dark cloud” day (thats what I call my anxious episodes) you might have a -7386 energy level like me and just want to sleep. Sometimes you have to just whip out your self care list, mine includes: painting, reading books, reading my bible, playing guitar, eating chocolate. But there are things you can do to try and steal back the energy that the dark cloud stole from you. Go outside, have a big coffee/tea or you could always try a pre-workout. People might have mixed feelings on these and it could possibly effect your anxiety as it has caffeine. (If you are worried and want to try it maybe talk to a health care professional. ) For ME, I have found that it gives me the jump to get to the gym and I actually enjoy burning that energy off. I use one thats an amino acid blend with natural energy supplement and I find it works really well.
I personally love to get the workout done in the morning because I feel like you get your day started on a good note but sometimes its whenever you get the chance. Seeing positive results in the way your body looks is obviously beneficial too. When it comes to self love I think everyone struggles, but thats a bigger issue that ill save for another blog post. I incorporate meditation into my routine, started doing yoga and really thinking about my diet. I think its pretty obvious if you think about your body as a car. If you put crappy gas in it… its not going to run very well. I just try to eat green things and meals that allow me to feel satiated using real, whole ingredients.
Listen, I want to feel like a freaking lamborghini this year. I want to do positive things for my body and my mind and I want feel productive every day. Mental Illness is shitty and can feel like a battle for control with your own brain but its my reality some days. I just thought of some ways I could combat it and if I treated my body well maybe it would help. Everyones journey with their mental health is different and require different plans of treatment. Anxiety lives with me but it doesn’t define me. Through God, therapy, exercise, nourishing food and a good support system I’m going to blast the dark cloud with sunshine any chance I get.. and maybe get a booty while I’m at it 😉
Remember, its ok to not be ok
